[Smushverse] Holiday Spirit
Title: Holiday Spirit
Fandom: Smushverse
Pairing: Madam Red/Lau
Word Count: 608 words
Notes: This takes place in a complicated smashup of canons and RP universes, hence why I'm listing it by smushverse rather than the fandoms the characters are from originally.
Summary: Christmas is a time for games.
The Snapdragon game ended when Riff, not as long-suffering as Sebastian, offered a wet rag and the suggestion that they play a game which would not burn more holes in Ciel's new tablecloth. Lau immediately perked up from where he was nursing a finger in his mouth (far longer than he would need to, Madam Red thought, and wasn't it suspicious that he hadn't missed a single one until Lord Hargreaves had pointed out his magnificent luck?). Finny was the one to propose Blind Man's Bluff and was met with eager agreement from most corners.
Riff, for his part, doused the flame as soon as the assent was given and handed the plate off to Bardroy to place in safekeeping before they attempted the latest round of property destruction.
Madam Red recalled playing these games, and it warmed her heart to see Lord Hargreaves and the servants coaxing him into activities that required no cruelty, no particular skill, just warm enjoyment and good feelings. (And, of course, a hefty amount in the pocket to pay for the damages caused, but Ciel would be used to that by now.) She remembered stealing a kiss from Vincent, once, nervously, her heart in her throat as she went around the room pecking at all the men in the room. Those had been happier times, though.
"Madam, I believe you have lost this round," Lau's voice said from behind her, and before she could look up, a blindfold was being tied around her face.
"Lau, you--!"
"Yaaa, Madam, you did not protest when the earl chose you." His voice sounded farther away now, and she was torn between laughter and annoyance. "You should really try to find someone before the game is over."
So she rose and moved forward, her arms out to catch anyone who might venture close enough. She felt quite the young girl and more than a bit silly until her hand connected with a sleeve and she caught it. It wasn't Lau; there was no way that she would have caught him so easily unless he wanted to be caught. She patted at her catch until she could say with conviction, "Lord Hargreaves, that was far too easy."
"It didn't seem right to let a lady go first," he said with a charming smile as she removed her blindfold and tied it around his eyes.
"Flatterer," she laughed.
The game continued on, with Riff spending the longest time in his blindfold carefully picking his way across the room so as not to stumble into anything, and, aside from the broken chair and Meilin's guilty tears, there was no large incident. As Bardroy took his turn, loudly protesting that he couldn't be held down like this, Madam Red felt a gentle touch on her waist that was not from the current blind man.
"I do believe this is a tradition of yours," Lau murmured in her ear. She glanced at him, then up to where the sprig of mistletoe rested innocently in the doorway.
She sighed. "If this is going to get me blindfolded again..."
Lau's laughter was nothing more than a puff of breath across her lips. "Yaa, do you think I would be that cruel?" He kissed her gently and pulled back, smiling his usual enigmatic smile.
She kept her eyes on him as she reached up to pluck a berry from the sprig. "Here," she murmured. "You shouldn't get all of these kisses, now, should you?"
Lau tilted his head and looked up at the berries, then down again to the one in her hand. "If that's a challenge, Madam, I would be happy to accept."
