Summary: Together, they're just Richter and Aster.

The bed was barely big enough for both of them, but Aster had never really cared either way about personal space, and Richter was used to having him close. Of course, it was one thing to have Aster leaning over his shoulder to correct a formula or exclaim over some data and quite another to have him cuddled all along the length of Richter's side, his head warm against Richter's shoulder.

"You're comfortable, Richter," Aster said, wriggling closer.

Richter would have pushed up his glasses if they were still on his face; as it was, he settled for looking away and trying not to let the heat he felt rise into his face. "You're too close."

"Ah!" Aster pulled back immediately, though Richter could still feel him. "I'm sorry, I forgot... Is it okay that we have to share a bed, or would you like me to sleep on the floor?"

"A scientist should be better at thinking before he acts." Richter shook his head and looked back at Aster's face. Aster couldn't hide anything; he wore his emotions on his face and in every line of his body, and it was impossible to get angry at him. "It's all right. I would be sleeping on the floor if it bothered me."

"No, I would." Aster settled down again, though, twisting onto his stomach and propping his chin on his hands. "Is it because you're not used to being close to anyone? Or is it because I'm human?"

There was no malice or judgement in that question, but something twisted in Richter's chest anyway. "I don't think of you as human," he said. It wasn't quite true, but Aster would know what he meant. Aster was good at that.

"I'm glad." Aster's smile crinkled up the corners of his eyes, and Richter's breath caught for a moment. "I'm just Aster, and you're just Richter. Beautiful Richter."

" 'Beautiful'?"

"You don't think so?" Aster sucked his lower lip into his mouth and chewed on it for a moment before saying, "Well, you are. You have such nice eyes, and you're really--" He stopped, then pressed on, looking down at the pillow. "You're really handsome."

This was dangerous. Richter's skin felt almost like a healing spell had just been cast; it was as if the shocky sensations of mana had combined with a bone-deep heat, and he recognized the symptoms right away as desire. And here Aster was, just a few centimeters away. Richter closed his eyes. None of the normal arguments would sway Aster, wonderfully uncomplicated Aster, who was nothing like any other person Richter had met. "Is--" His voice caught, and he cleared his throat. "That doesn't matter."

But when he opened his eyes again, Aster was looking at him, and any hesitation that might have been there earlier was gone. "May I kiss you?" he asked.

If this was a cliff, Richter was over the edge before Aster had finished his question. He reached out and brushed his fingertips light over Aster's skin. Aster leaned into the touch with a sigh and a smile before moving closer and gently, awkwardly, touching his lips to Richter's.
